Very nice, thank you for the effort!

There is no need to untar the file, the python tarfile module can give you file handles that look like actual files but are backed by the archive.

Cairo can also draw PDF, so I added some initial support. No multi-page yet, but that would be easy too.

I've added the aspect ratio.
